HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleybal team began its season with a pair of wins in the Route 92 Showdown, a five-set victory (27-25, 25-27, 25-21, 18-25, 15-5) over Chico State and a 3-1 win over Barry (25-19, 25-27, 25-16, 29-27).
The Penguins (2-0) began the day in Belmont, where they took on Chico State (0-1), who is picked to finish third in the CCAA North. Preseason All-PacWest selection
Aimee Steinwand had the first kill of the season and finished the match with 13. She was one of five Penguins to register double-digits kills against the Wildcats, led by 16 from senior
Madeline Powelson. Dominican overcame an early 7-3 deficit in set one and tied it at 12-12. The two teams exchanged points until Dominican scored the last two points to take the early lead. Dominican had set point in set two but the Wildcats scored four of the next five points to even the match. A 9-4 run in set three gave the Penguins the lead yet again but the Wildcats forced a decisive fifth set but new head coach
Yami Nolan's team made quick work of the Wildcats and closed out the match on an 8-0 run.
Dominican then headed down the 92 to face Barry (1-1) at Cal State East Bay. Dominican grabbed an early lead yet again, only to see the Buccaneers stave off set point in set two and tie the match at one set apiece. Barry, picked to finish fourth in the nine-team Sunshine State Conference, ran out of steam as the Penguins ran away with set three and staved off set point twice themselves to take set four.
Steinwand had 14 more kills to finish with the day with 27. Powelson added a dozen to finish with a team-high 28.
Kate Even also added 12 kills.
Amanda Lee, the reigning PacWest Libero of the Year, combined for 48 digs. Senior setter
Hannah Smith dished out 98 assists and matched a career-high with 57 against the Wildcats.
On Saturday, the Penguins have two more matches, both at Cal State East Bay. They face Humboldt State at 11 a.m. and the host Pioneers at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available
