Penguins reach century mark in key PacWest victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team scored a decisive 102-79 victory over Chaminade on Thursday in a crucial PacWest matchup.

The win avenges an 88-83 loss at Chaminade (9-12/7-7 PacWest) in January and currently gives the Penguins (12-9/8-6 PacWest) control of the sixth and final berth to the PacWest Championships in March.

Josh Ramirez led the charge on 9-of-10 shooting for 25 points. He pulled down four rebounds, dished out six assists, had two blocks, and a steal. Seth Turner went 8-of-9 for 21 points and had three assists and a steal. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 15 points and is closing in on the 1,000-point mark with 976 career points. Ryo Tawatari added 13 points with a career-high nine assists, plus a block and a steal. Cedric Thomas added a career-high 10 points. The freshman sparked the Penguins in the first half with a perfect 5-of-5 performance in just in seven minutes. Matt Hayes added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Silverswords were led by Rohndell Goodwin, who came off the bench for a game-high 27 points. Kuany Kuany added 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Penguins took high-quality shots all night and made 68.3 percent (41-of-60) of them. Three quick buckets in the paint set the tone the lead stood at 10 less than five minutes into action. Dominican shot 77.4 percent (24-of-31) for the half and streaked out to a 58-36 halftime lead. Dominican got to the rim at ease for 34 points in the half and finished with 58 for the game.

In the second half, a Goodwin jumper capped a 10-point Silverswords run and cut Dominican's lead to 72-61 with 10:51 to go. Turner stopped the run with a three-pointer and Ramirez took the wind out of the Silverswords' sails with a fast break dunk. Another Turner three-pointer with under seven minutes to go made it a 19-point ballgame.

Dominican students who attended Thursday night's game are eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship for fall 2016. Thanks to Dominican Trustee John Boneparth and his wife, Gail Harris, a recipient will be drawn from the list of students who attended Thursday night's doubleheader, plus each of the remaining women's and men's basketball home games in the Conlan Center on February 20 and February 22.

The Penguins depart on a three-game road trip to Southern California, where they'll face Point Loma, California Baptist, and Azusa Pacific. The first game is on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in San Diego.
