FRESNO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team locked up the fifth seed in the upcoming PacWest Championships with an 83-65 victory at Fresno Pacific.
The Penguins (17-10/13-7 PacWest) cruised thanks to a 17-4 first quarter and held the Sunbirds (5-21/3-17 PacWest) to 6-of-27 (22.2 percent) shooting in the first half. Dominican led by as many as 25 and led by double digits the entire second half.
Taylor Donnot led all players with 20 points.
Carly Holboke added 17 points on four three-pointers, and
Jade Castro had 15 points with a pair of long balls.
Natalie Diaz added 13 points and nine rebounds. With
Sandra Ikeora out injured,
Ashley Sorensen came up big in the start. She had nine points, a team-high 10 rebounds, career-high six blocks, and four steals.
Allyssa Weatherd also finished with nine points.
FPU was led by 15 points apiece from Taylor Caspers and Daeja Gilmer.
The Penguins finish the season with their best record in program history during the DII era. Dominican's season will continue at the PacWest Championships at CU Arena. The fifth-seed Penguins will face the fourth-seeded Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (17-10/14-6 PacWest) on Thursday, March 3 at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are on sale
