Penguins punch ticket to Irvine on final day of regular season

FRESNO, Calif. — On the final day of the 2015-16 regular season, the Dominican University of California men's basketball team needed two things to happen to extend the season and earn the sixth and final berth to the PacWest Championships. Dominican needed to beat Fresno Pacific on the road and needed Azusa Pacific to win at UH Hilo.

The Penguins (14-13/10-10 PacWest) took care of business on their end with an 87-79 victory over the Sunbirds (14-13/9-11 PacWest), which eliminated FPU from the postseason hunt. In Hawaii, Azusa Pacific helped the Penguins out with an 85-75 victory that ended the Vulcans' season.

Dominican jumped out to a 16-2 lead only to see the game tied 33-33 at halftime. A Josh Ramirez layup began an 8-0 run that saw the Sunbirds go scoreless for nearly four minutes. Russell Davis later capped a 13-4 run that gave Dominican its largest lead of the night, 63-44, with 9:24 to go. The Sunbirds trimmed the lead to single digits with under a minute to go but the Penguins went 6-of-8 from the free throw line to close things out.

The Penguins received a game-high 20 points from Ramirez, who also grabbed six rebounds. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 18 points off the bench with 11 of those points coming at the free throw line. Matt Hayes added a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He nearly had the triple-double with eight assists, and had two steals and no turnovers. Reverend Maduakor added 12 points. Seth Turner scored nine points and Ryo Tawatari added eight points.

FPU was led by Spencer Krannitz's 19 points. Gabe Solarin came off the bench for 17 points and Madison Higgins finished with 15 points.

Dominican's season will continue at the PacWest Championships at CU Arena. The sixth-seed Penguins will face third-seeded California Baptist in the first game of the tournament on Thursday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. The two teams last met in Riverside, California where the Lancers edged the Penguins 89-88 thanks to a pair of last-second free throws. Tickets for the PacWest Championships are on sale here.
