Penguins have best shooting night of season in win at Hawai'i Hilo

HILO, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team notched a winning road trip to Hawaii with an 85-66 victory at Hawai'i Hilo on Monday evening.

The Penguins (7-5/3-2 PacWest) got a pair of standout performances from Sandra Ikeora and Alanna Scott. Ikeora turned in what is becoming routine with 22 points and 17 rebounds, both which were game-highs. It was her seventh double-double of the season and fourth consecutive 15-plus rebound game. Ikeora is second in the PacWest in scoring (19.9 ppg) and leads the conference in rebounding (12.6 rpg). Scott went 7-of-8 from the field with three three-pointers and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, all career-highs. Alyssa Lorenzo, in her second start of the season, finished with a season-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Natalie Diaz added a dozen points and half a dozen rebounds.

Dominican led wire-to-wire and jumped out to an 8-0 lead, keeping the Vulcans (1-7/1-4 PacWest) off the board for the first three and a half minutes. A Vanessa Cruz three-pointer pushed the lead to double digits with 5:21 to go in the first quarter and the Vulcans would never get any closer. The lead grew to as large as 26 at the end of the third quarter.

Ten different Penguins recorded a field goal as the team combined for a season-high 47.2 percent (34-of-72) from the field. That included a season-high 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from behind the arc, the team's best three-point shooting performance since shooting the same on Feb. 19, 2011 in a win over Chaminade.

The Vulcans were led by Amber Vaughn's 11 points off the bench. Vanessa Mancera and Sydney Mercer added 10 points apiece.

The season resumes on Jan. 3, 2017 at Notre Dame de Namur. The Penguins host Youth Night on Jan. 5 versus Point Loma at 4:30 p.m., and Academy of Art on Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
