HILO, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team was held to its lowest scoring output since 2011 in a 78-41 loss at Hawai'i Hilo on Monday night.
Dominican (3-8/2-3 PacWest) shot a season-low 28.6 percent (16-of-56). The team's 41 points were the fewest since being held to 40 points in a loss at Dixie State on Feb. 10, 2011.
Ryo Tawatari scored a team-high 11 points but no other Penguin reached double digits. The Penguins' leading scorer,
Jeremiah Gray, was limited to seven points.
Reverend Maduakor and
Josh Ramirez each added six points apiece in the loss.
The Vulcans (4-6/3-2 PacWest) made 16 of their first 18 shots and shot 62.0 percent (31-of-60) from the field. Hawai'i Hilo led 48-22 at the half and Dominican never got closer than 21 points. UHH also dominated the boards 41-22. Four Vulcans scored in double digits, led by game-highs of 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 13 rebounds from Brian Ishola.
Dominican's season resumes on Jan. 3, 2017 at Notre Dame de Namur. The Penguins host Youth Night on Jan. 5 versus Point Loma at 6:30 p.m., and host Academy of Art on Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
