Penguins fall in final game versus BYU-Hawaii

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday with an 85-75 loss to visiting BYU-Hawaii.

It was the final time meeting between the two teams, as BYU-Hawaii (4-4/2-2 PacWest) is discontinuing its intercollegiate athletics program after the 2016-17 season. With the loss, the all-time series ends tied at 6-6.

Dominican got off to a promising start after the Penguins scored a layup off of the opening tip but the Seasiders responded with a 9-0 run. The Penguins trimmed the lead to one but BYU-Hawaii pushed it right back to 11. The Penguins shot just 31.7 percent (13-of-41) in the half and trailed 41-37 at the intermission.

The Penguins opened the second half with back-to-back layups from Taylor Donnot and Vanessa Cruz that evened the score at 41-41 but a 6-0 Seasiders run found the Penguins trailing yet again. Dominican fought its way to the free throw line and used a 7-1 run that knotted the game yet again, 48-48, with three minutes to go in the third quarter. Alexis Price's layup with 21 seconds to gave Dominican a 57-56 lead go but Tyvette White's three-point play put the Seasiders back in front headed into the fourth quarter.

Safia Sheikh added a three-point play to begin the fourth and Dominican's deficit stood at five. Another Ikeora layup tied the game with 7:13 to go but Dominican fell victim to a 12-2 run and never recovered.

Ikeora was one of four Penguins in double digits with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Donnot added 13 points. Price and Natalie Diaz each had 10 points apiece. Ashley Sorensen had 11 rebounds.

Safia Sheikh led BYU-Hawaii with 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Marian Sheikh added 17 points. The sisters combined for 18-of-21 from the free throw line, just one less made free throw than the Penguins combined.

Dominican will head off for its annual Hawaii trip, where the Penguins will face the other three Hawaiian teams in the PacWest: Hawai'i Pacific on Dec. 14, Chaminade on Dec. 16, and Hawai'i Hilo on Dec. 19.
