SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team dropped a 91-67 decision at San Francisco State on Saturday.
The Penguins (1-1) attempted 19 more field goals than the Gators (2-0) but were held to 37.9 percent (25-of-66) shooting and 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from deep. In contrast, the Gators, picked to finish sixth in the 13-team CCAA, shot 66 percent (31-of-47).
Dominican held a six-point lead four minutes in but the Gators used a 7-0 run to take the lead, 11-10. CJ Thomas' bucket at the 11-minute mark tied the game at 16-16 but Warren Jackson's fastbreak layup sparked an 11-0 run. By halftime, the deficit was 15 points, 38-23.
Early in the second half,
Jeremiah Gray scored seven consecutive points to pull the Penguins within 11, and a Gray layup with 15:42 trimmed the lead to single digits. The Gators responded yet again with a six-point run and the Penguins would get no closer than 10 points. Dominican went just 5-of-19 over the final seven minutes.
Gray went 8-of-15 with four three-pointers for a game-high 22 points.
Josh Ramirez added eight points, and
Reverend Maduakor and Thomas both had seven points apiece.
Ryo Tawatari added six points and six assists.
Jordan Tribble had a team-high five rebounds.
Five Gators reached double digits, led by Jackson off the bench. Coley Aspay added 17 points, Parker U'u had 15, Chiefy Ugbaja scored 13, and Israel Hakim had 11 points.
The Penguins host No. 11 nationally-ranked Chico State on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are picked to repeat as CCAA Champions and are 1-1 after a 65-61 win over Concordia and a 59-58 loss to Biola, in which the Wildcats missed a free throw with .3 seconds left.
