SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team entered the week having earned the program's first-ever NCAA Division II West Region Ranking at No. 10. That ranking may be short-lived though after the Penguins were upset at home, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19), by Point Loma on Friday.
The Penguins (16-8/12-4 PacWest) fall into third place behind California Baptist. With first-place Concordia not yet eligible for NCAA postseason competition, the automatic qualifier to the West Regionals goes to the second-place team.
Dominican took set one 26-24 but dropped the next two sets 25-22. The Penguins trailed Point Loma (10-16/8-9 PacWest 7-2) to begin the fourth set and couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Friday's match featured the two top libero in the PacWest in
Amanda Lee and Point Loma's Christin Fisher. Lee impressed with a team-high 34 digs but Fisher stole the spotlight with a career-high 40 digs. Both teams recorded over 100 digs and each had five players in double digit digs.
Aimee Steinwand tallied 16 kills but was the only Penguin to record double-digit kills. The Penguins had a strong night blocking with four apiece from Steinwand and
Kate Even.
Madeline Powelson and
Brittany Latigue added three blocks apiece.
Brianna Sizemore led all players with 27 kills for the Sea Lions.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, Fresno Pacific (8-12/6-10 PacWest) comes calling. In the two teams' previous meeting in Fresno, the Penguins won in five sets. The home schedule concludes on Monday, Nov. 14 versus Hawai'i Hilo (9-12/7-9 PacWest). That is also Senior Night, where the Penguins' four seniors — Lee, Powelson,
Rebecca Schira, and
Hannah Smith— will be recognized. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
