SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team shot the lights out in the Conlan Center in an 84-71 victory over Holy Names on Thursday. The Penguins put on a shooting clinic with
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten and
Ryo Tawatari going a combined 17-of-18 from the field and 7-of-7 from deep.
As a team, Dominican (7-5/3-2 PacWest) shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field, incluindg 64 percent (16-of-25) in the second half. Schwartz-Edmisten, who came off the bench, made his first 11 shots before missing his final field goal attempt, a contested runner from the left side of the key with 2:24 left in the game. He finished 4-of-4 from three-point land and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe for a game-high 29 points. Tawatari, who was featured in the popular Japanese site
Number Web earlier in the week, scored 16 points and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field with three three pointers. His only blemish came at the free throw line, where he was 1-of-2.
Josh Ramirez also added 16 points.
Matt Hayes led the Penguins with eight rebounds and four assists.
The Penguins actually found themselves trailing most of the first half. HNU (3-11/2-4 PacWest) led by as many as eight. In fact, the Penguins led for all of 21 seconds in the first 19 minutes. However, senior
Karl Ohrner made a free throw to give the Penguins a lead with 46 seconds before the half and Schwartz-Edmisten stole the ball and went the other way for his 18th and 19th points to send the Penguins into halftime ahead, 36-33.
Ramirez made the first two points of the second half and another Ramirez layup two minutes later gave the Penguins a 10-point lead. The lead grew to 13 on a — you guessed it — three from Schwartz-Edmisten, but dipped to four in a span of a minute and a half. However, four mintues later, with 8:49 to go, the Penguins led by double digits again and never faced a true threat the rest of the way.
Holy Names relied heavily on senior Joshua Crum. He scored a team-high 27 points on 11-of-27 shooting.
Reverend Maduakor (seven points, four rebounds) and
Russell Davis (four poitns, two rebounds, one block) soaked up most of the defensive duties against Crum, a former high school teammate of Davis. The Hawks were forced to settle for a lot of mid-range jumpers and went just 3-of-9 from behind the arc.
The win gives the Penguins an 11-0 record against the Hawks dating back to 2009 with the two teams set to meet again on Jan. 29. First, the Penguins host another Bay Area conference opponent, Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game at 5:30 p.m. That is Gold Rush Night sponsored by Gold Rush Jewelers. Free t-shirts will be given away and fans are encouraged to wear gold to the games. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
