OAKLAND, Calif. — Led by a perfect 7-of-7 night from
Josh Ramirez, the Dominican University of California men's basketball team shot a season-high 61.7 percent en route to an 80-56 PacWest victory at Holy Names.
Ramirez also went a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line and led the Penguins (11-8/7-5 PacWest) with 18 points. He led all players with six rebounds.
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added 16 points on four three-pointers and had 13 points by halftime.
Reverend Maduakor and
Seth Turner each added nine points apiece.
Dominican went 29-of-47 from the field including a staggering 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) in the second half. The Penguins limited HNU (3-18/2-11 PacWest) to 19-of-50 (38 percent). The Penguins also cleaned up the boards and won the rebounding battle 33-21.
The Penguins led the first seven minutes until HNU evened the scored at 9-9 and took an 11-10 lead at the 11-minute mark on a bucket from Joshua Crum. That would be HNU's only lead though. Ramirez gave the Penguins the lead for good a minute later on a pair of free throws and the lead grew to double digits by halftime, 35-25.
Three minutes into the second half, Dominican's lead grew to 18. Back-to-back layups from
Russell Davis made it a 20-point game with 13:44 to go and Dominican led comfortably the rest of the way.
Crum, the PacWest's leading scorer, led all players with 21 points for the Hawks. Blake Watkins added 14 points off the bench.
The win gives the Penguins a 12-0 record against the Hawks dating back to 2009. Dominican returns home to the Conlan Center on Monday night to face UH Hilo at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for all fans as part of Academic Night. At halftime of the men's game, PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue will present Dominican President Mary B. Marcy with the 2014-15 Academic Achievement Award, the program's record sixth consecutive award, and the 2014-15 Make-A-Wish Award.
