SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Roberto Macias scored the first goal of the season by a Dominican University of California player but the Dominican men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Concordia Irvine on Thursday in the two teams' PacWest opener.
Much as how they've been haunted early in the season, the Penguins (0-6-0/0-1-0 PacWest) allowed a quick goal, this time barely six minutes into play. The Penguins were unable to clear the ball and Jesus Garcia found Takuro Nihei through the scrum for a goal. Garcia found Connor Gordon in the second half, in the 52nd minute, to extend the lead to 2-0.
Macias' goal came in the 54th minute. An Eagles (1-4-0/1-0-0 PacWest) foul set up a direct kick from the right side and the junior booted it in. Dominican continued to press and had its opportunities to score. Three minutes later, freshman
Tanner Herrero had a shot but it sailed wide left. Macias had another shot on goal in the 60th minute but had it saved. Ryan Gollot's header in the 62nd minute went wide left. Two more shots in the 70th and 71st minute by Gollot and
Austen McGregor were also saved.
Connor Murphy had a pair of shots in the final twenty minutes that went wide left, and
Micah Alo's shot in the 80th minute also went high.
