SAN FRANCISCO – The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team walked into "The Swamp" and beat San Francisco State on Saturday. Dominican grabbed an early 2-0 lead and captured a 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23) victory.
The Penguins (3-3) jumped on the Gators (2-5) in the first two sets and cruised to a 2-0 lead after winning each match by 10 or more points. Dominican had its eyes on the sweep but couldn't hold onto a 19-18 lead in set three. SF State's Jaclyn Clark laid down one of her team-best and career-high 21 kills and three consecutive Dominican errors found the Penguins trailing 22-19. A pair of Gator attack errors helped the Penguins pull back within a point, 24-23, but a Samantha Krakower kill prevented the sweep. Dominican stood its ground in set four though. With the match tied 5-5, Dominican received four consecutive kills from three different players to take a 9-5 lead. An
Amanda Lee service ace stretched the lead to 15-10 but the Gators gave a scare by tying the set at 17-17. Dominican trailed 23-22 but an
Aimee Steinwand kill and a pair of
Madeline Powelson kills closed out the set and the match.
"We really played with maturity and did a good job of playing together as a team," said Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "We stuck with the game plan and it was nice to have
Amanda Wasko back in the lineup playing all the way around."
Steinwand recorded 21 kills and now leads the team with 108. Powelson added 11 kills in the victory. Wasko, who has been eased back into things since recovering from a season-ending knee injury before the start of the 2014 season, looked like her old All-PacWest self with 11 kills.
Hannah Smith dished out 47 assists. Dominican recorded 91 digs and five Penguins recorded double-digit digs:
Amanda Lee (29), Wasko (20), Powelson (15), Smith (12), and Steinwand (10). The Penguins also had a great game at the net, led by freshman
Brittany Latigue, who had had nine block assists and 10 total blocks, both of which are second-most in a match by a Dominican player.
Clark and Jessica Nicerio each had 17 digs for the Gators.
Dominican has a week off before beginning PacWest Conference play. The Penguins will head to Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 19 for a 3 p.m. match. Live video and stats will be provided by FPU and will be available at
