Cavender sets single-season marks at Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. — The results weren't what the Penguins were looking for but history was made by the Dominican softball team at Azusa Pacific on Monday afternoon as Catlyn Cavender secured her place in program history.

Cavender entered game one with a .352 batting average, twenty points behind the single-season mark set in 2011 by Crystal Albert. Despite the 9-0 five-inning loss and a close 2-1 defeat in game two, Cavender went 5-for-6 on the day, including 4-for-4 in game two, to become the new program's new single-season batting average leader with a .375 clip. Cavender also crushed the marks for highest slugging percentage and highest on base percentage, with .711 and .448 respectively. Her 10 home runs this season were also the most by a Dominican player in a single season in the Division II era and put her in a three-way tie for second most in the PacWest. She led the Penguins in nearly every offensive category, also tallying 48 hits and 91 total bases.

The Penguins had their opportunities in game one. Three singles in the first inning went to waste. The Penguins had three more hits in the game but would never advance a runner into scoring position. The Cougars, on the other hand, made the most of their opportunities. Azusa Pacific plated single runs in the first and second innings, then put up three runs in the third to blow things open. The Cougars added on with a four-run fourth, thanks in large part to a three-run home run by Kayla Jimenez.

Game two was a much tighter affair but the Penguins again missed out on early scoring opportunties, stranding a pair in each of the first four innings. In fact, Dominican had a runner in scoring position in all seven innings. The Penguins finally plated a run in the seventh on Katelyn Harden's RBI double. However, she was out trying to get to third. Cavender followed with her fourth hit of the game but was out on a fielder's choice. By then, Azusa Pacific had struck with Janelle Eccles' and Katrina Oviedo's RBI base hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Harden took another tough loss in game two to finish the season at 9-12 while Kelsey Goodner fell to 3-7 on the season with the loss in game one.

Kayla Rodriguez was 2-for-2 in her final game as a Penguin. Leslie Mesa went 1-for-3 with a run in her final game and Samantha Talavera also recorded a hit in the first at-bat of her final game. Rodriguez is Dominican's all-time leader in the Division II era in runs scored (104) and stolen bases (72). Her 28 stolen bases in 2015 were a single-season record for the program. Rodriguez also holds the single game records for hits (4) and hit by pitch (3) in a game. Mesa finishes her career as the program's leader in most games played (200) and started (198), most at bats (546), hits (159), sacrifice flies (8) and hits (30), and is tied for most walks (56) in the Division II era. Talavera is tied for first in a single game for gunning down two runners in a game.
