Offense silenced by BYU-Hawaii pitching

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The hot-hitting Dominican University of California softball team was held quiet by BYU-Hawaii pitcher Destyni Valencia in a pair of 6-1 and 2-1 PacWest losses on Friday.

The Penguins, who were winners of six of their last eight games and had averaged .321 hitting and six runs per game in that span, were limited to .160 hitting in Friday's doubleheader. It took six innings for Dominican to record their first hit in game one, a leadoff single by Kayla Rodriguez. She scored two batters later on Leslie Mesa's RBI single to left center. Mesa, and Katelyn Haren, who also singled, were stranded to end the rally. BYU-Hawaii got a run back in the seventh to extend the lead back to five and Dominican was limited to a Sarah McKenzie single in the seventh.

Valencia (5-14) allowed just four hits in each game and struck out seven in the doubleheader. Dominican starter Kelsey Goodner (2-4) was charged with five runs, three earned, in four innings of work. Gaby Katafias allowed one run in three innings of relief.

Harden (8-10) was the hard-luck loser in game two in her 13th complete game of the season. Harden's blemish came in the second inning when the Seasiders strung together four hits to drive home a pair of runs. She was able to work out of jams the rest of the game and kept the Penguins within striking distance. Kayla Rodriguez spoile Valencia's second no-hit bid of the day in the fifth inning with a single to left field. In the seventh inning, Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice, and after swiping a couple of bags, scored on Tori Johnson's single to center. However, Valencia ended the threat by striking out Katafias and getting Harden on a fielder's choice.

The homestand concludes on Sunday, April 19 versus Holy Names with a Senior Day pregame ceremony honoring Mesa, Kalya Rodriguez, and Samantha Talavera. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. with the pregame ceremony at 11:45 a.m.
