SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team got back into the win column in a big way with a sweep of Chaminade, 12-4 in six innings and 6-5 in eight innings, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Penguins could point in any number of directions to find a hero on the day. Right fielder
Alyssa Lanza slammed face first into the fence to bring back a Nicole Erichsen home run that would have given the Silverswords an early 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Instead, after being tended to for a bloody nose, Lanza stepped into the box in the bottom half of the inning and made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly. There was left fielder
Tori Johnson, who made a great running catch to prevent an extra base hit in the top of the eighth in game two. There were the Penguins' starting pitchers, who both threw complete games. There was
Sarah McKenzie, who had two go-ahead RBIs in game two — the first and the last. Ten different players tallied an RBI as Dominican exploded for 25 hits on the day.
In game one, Dominican wasted no time.
Ashlyn Moriarity's single up the middle scored Johnson, who started the game with an infield single. After her gutty catch, Lanza made it a 2-0 game, and while Lanza's catch did save two runs, the Silverswords tied the game in the fourth when Capllonch singled in a pair with two outs. The Penguins regained the lead in the fourth on Johnson's RBI single through the right side but Chaminade took it right back on Coco Stewart's two-run homer to make it a 4-3 game.
The Penguins turned the tables again in the bottom of the fifth.
Leslie Mesa and
Katelyn Harden both drew four-pitch walks, which chased CUH starter Brett Aspel.
Catlyn Cavender greeted Luana Moreno with an RBI double to left center, then Moriarity followed with an RBI groundout.
Tayler Munoz added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to put the Penguins ahead 6-4.
Dominican capitalized on a pair of Silverswords errors and batted around in the sixth inning as the Penguins exploded for six runs on six hits to invoke the run rule.
Kayla Rodriguez, who began the inning, doubled home Cavender for the walk-off hit.
Chaminade threatened in game two but Erichsen grounded out with two runners in scoring position. Dominican grabbed the lead in the second on McKenzie's RBI single back up the middle. The Penguins made it a 5-0 game in the third with a two-out rally. After the first two batters were quickly retired, Harden singled in the infield. Cavender tripled on a 1-2 pitch, then Munoz doubled down the third baseline, and
Marissa Cordisco singled to left field to chase starter Kaitlyn Watanabe.
An RBI double by Shannan Hokoma got the Silverswords on the board, then a dropped ball at first with two outs allowed two more runs to score to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Erichsen, who was denied of a home run in game two, got a hold of another one in game two for a no-doubter that tied the game 5-5 and got Watanabe off the hook.
The Silverswords had a scoring opportunity in the sixth but Stewart struck out swinging. Both teams had a chance in the seventh but both teams hit into unassisted double plays at first base. With one out, Moriarity and Munoz each singled on the first pitch they saw. Pinch hitter
Samantha Talavera loaded the bases on an error at third base and McKenzie drove Moriarity home with a fielder's choice to shortstop for the game-winner.
Kelsey Goodner scattered three hits and struck out four over six innings in game one to pick up her first career victory. Harden allowed three earned runs in game two and went the full eight innings to pick up her fifth win of the season. Harden also went 2-for-6 with a pair of runs batted in, a walk, and a stolen base. Munoz went 4-for-7 with a pair of runs and two runs batted in. Moriarity went 4-for-8 with three runs and three runs batted in. Mesa went 3-for-6 with two runs, an RBI, and a pair of walks. Johnson went 3-for-7 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Kayla Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, a pair of walks, and a perfect 2-for-2 on the basepaths.
