Penguins come alive in game two to earn split at Academy of Art

BRISBANE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California rallied back in game two of a PacWest doubleheader to earn the split versus Academy of Art at Mission Blue Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins scored in four different innings and rode Katelyn Harden's three-hit shutout to take game two 4-0. The Penguins grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first when the speedy Kayla Rodriguez made it all the way to second on a throwing error. She stole third and later, with two outs, scored on another throwing error. Meanwhile the Urban Knights saw their first six batters retired by Harden. Dominican doubled its lead in the third. Tori Johnson reached on another ART U error, advanced to second on a groundout, and moved to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Leslie Mesa's single to right center.

ART U nearly rallied in the bottom of the third. Samantha Klune led off with a double and advanced to third. The Penguins decided to go for the fielder's choice on Andrea Gill's ball in play. The throw home beat Klune so she backtracked to third. Gill, who was approaching third on the rundown, was also near the bag, as was shortstop Kayla Rodriguez, who applied the tag on Klune and possibly Gill. Despite Dominican Head Coach Sarah Byrne pleading the Penguins' case, Rodriguez was called for interference setting up second and third with no outs for ART U. Dominican ended the threat though with defense that was lacking early on. Third baseman Tayler Munoz snagged a liner her way and first baseman Kelsey Goodner picked a groundball and tagged the bag to end the threat.

Rodriguez used her speed to get things going again in the fifth. She struck out swinging to begin the inning but the ball was also a wild pitch, which allowed Rodriguez to sprint down the baseline without a throw. She moved to second on Johnson's sacrifice bunt and to third on another wild pitch. Mesa had another RBI single, a two-out drive to left center. In the seventh, Rodriguez set things in motion yet again with a leadoff walk. She stole second, moved to third on Johnson's single through the right side, and scored on a Harden sacrifice fly. The Penguins sealed things up with solid defense the rest of the way. Alyssa Lanza had a diving catch in center field to take away extra bases, Johnson tracked down a ball in foul territory before nearly running into the fence, and Munoz speared another ball at the hot corner.

Dominican dropped game one 4-1 despite Dominican pitchers not surrendering an earned run in the contest. Ashlyn Moriarity went three innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits and a walk. All four ART U runs scored while she was in the circle. A one-out error by Catlyn Cavender in the third inning kept the inning alive. Moriarity got the number two batter, Kamyle Glover, out with a bouncer back to the circle but she allowed back-to-back RBI singles that led to three unearned runs. Goodner pitched the remaining three innings and allowed just two hits. ART U got another unearned run in the fifth when Glover reached on a throwing error. Leadoff Haily MacDonald, who would have been stranded at third, ended up scoring on a dribbler back to the circle. The Penguins' run came in the sixth when Cavender, who singled and stole second, scored when Goodner's ball hit to second was thrown away.

Dominican is off for a week before playing a non-conference doubleheader at Humbolt State. The Lumberjacks, who recently dropped out of the NCAA Division II Top 25, are currently 17-8 on the season and will play six games before facing the Penguins next Sunday, March 22.
