SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's basetball team dropped an 88-79 decision to PacWest rival Academy of Art in historic Kezar Pavilion on Thusrday evening.
Sophomore
Sandra Ikeora had her second double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 rebounds but the Penguins (5-4/1-1 PacWest) did a poor job of protecting the ball and shot just 15-of-30 from the free throw line.
The Penguins led early on but went all but silent for the last four minutes of the first half as they committed five of their 21 turnovers and watched a 15-14 lead turn into a 28-18 deficit by the end of the quarter. Dominican cut the lead to three thanks to free throws from Ikeora and junior
Carly Holboke. However, the Penguins failed to score on their next five possessions and watched the deficit grow back to double digits. The Penguins had numerous opportunities to cut into the lead and whittled it down to five to begin the third quarter but time and time again missed costly free throws. They would get no closer than nine in the final 10 minutes.
Allyssa Weatherd led Dominican with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting but was just 5-of-13 from the charity stripe. She added seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Carly Holboke came off the bench to score 17 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Natalie Diaz scored 15 points.
As a team, ART U (8-5/3-0 PacWest) shot 44.2 percent (34-of-77) from the field but made 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) free throw attempts. The Urban Knights were led by Regina Camera's game-high 24 points. Fellow starters Zoie Sheng and Jasmin Guinn added 23 points apiece.
Dominican will look to finish out the calendar year with a winning record on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Notre Dame de Namur in an afternoon doubleheader. The women are set to begin at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.
