OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team got back in the win column on Saturday night with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-14) sweep at Holy Names.
It was the first PacWest win of the season for the Penguins (4-7/1-4 PacWest), who also snapped a four-match losing streak. Holy Names (2-12/0-5 PacWest) remains in search of its first conference win.
The Penguins took set one by creating space midway through the set. Tied 10-10, Dominican scored seven of the next nine points to take a 17-12 lead and eventually the early 1-0 lead. Dominican jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set two but squandered a 17-11 lead only to see HNU tie the set at 18-18. Head Coach
Gayle Stammer called a timeout and the Penguins responded out of the huddle with a 7-3 run, capped by a pair of
Madeline Powelson kills and a bad set from HNU's Heather Emory. Dominican took an early 8-4 lead in set two and cruised to the sweep. The Penguins were especially efficient in set three, hitting 32.4 percent while holding HNU to negative 3.4 percent.
Freshman
Brittany Latigue led all players with a career-high 14 kills. Sophomore
Aimee Steinwand added a dozen and freshman
Kate Even had eight. Lihau Perreira and Kaylyn Lakey led Holy Names with seven kills apiece. Junior
Amanda Lee had a match-high 13 digs for the Penguins and Powelson had 10 digs. Steinwand had three service aces, Latigue added a pair, and so did sophomore
Shannon RiggioKerley.
Dominican hosts two home matches next week. Academy of Art (6-8/2-4 PacWest) visits on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and Fresno Pacific visits on Saturday, Oct. 10. at 3 p.m. Saturday's match is also Chilly's Cove. Alumni, parents, donors, and Penguin Club members are welcomed to mingle before the match with free refreshments.
