RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team dropped its final match of a three-match trip to Southern California in a tough 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-8) loss at California Baptist.
The first-place Lancers (15-3/8-2 Pac West) jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in set one and rode it to a 1-0 lead but Dominican (5-11/2-8 PacWest) responded by taking the next two sets to go up 2-1. Trailing a point, 14-13, in set three, Dominican saw CBU score the next five points and Dominican would not recover. The Lancers scored the first four points in the deciding set and scored five of the match's final seven points.
The Penguins, already thin on numbers due to mounting injuries, also caught a team-wide bug. Still, Dominican had three players in double digit kills. Sophomore
Aimee Steinwand led all players with 18, freshman
Brittany Latigue added 13, and junior
Madeline Powelson had a dozen. Junior setter
Hannah Smith dished out 40 assists. Four Penguins recorded double digit digs, led by junior libero
Amanda Lee's 27. Steinwand added 15, Powelson had 12, and Smith had 11. The Penguins' blocking also continued to be a strong suit, with 18 in the match, seven of which came from freshman
Kate Even and six from Steinwand.
CBU had four players in double digit kills, led by Lauren Hackett's 18. Jordyn Siko was one of six CBU players to reach double digit kills and led the Lancers with 19 digs.
Dominican returns home to the Conlan Center for the next two matches. The Penguins host the newest member of the PacWest, Concordia Irvine (11-9/7-4 PacWest), on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 24, Dominican hosts Dixie State (9-8/6-3 PacWest) in a 3 p.m. matinee.
