Penguins swept to begin SoCal road trip

SAN DIEGO — The Dominican women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-18) at Point Loma on Thursday night to begin the Penguins' three-day, three-match road trip.

The Penguins (5-9/2-6 PacWest) dug themseleves in a hole early, hitting negative 53 percent in set one. They fared slightly better moving forward but still hit .042 for the match. Sophomore Aimee Steinwand had a team-high 12 kills on .189 hitting and was the only Penguin over .100. Steinwand currently ranks fourth in the PacWest in hitting with 3.98 per set.

Junior libero Amanda Lee led all players with 21 digs and remains second in the conference in digs per set (5.53). Fellow junior Hannah Smith dished out 20 assists.

A bright spot for the Penguins continued to be their blocking. Dominican recorded 16 blocks to the Sea Lions' six, led by six alone from freshman middle blocker Brittany Latigue.

Point Loma (10-8/5-5 PacWest) was led by Heather Leavitt's 13 kills on .119. Three Sea Lions recorded double digit digs, led by Christin Fisher's 19.

Dominican travels back north to Azusa Pacific for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 16. They'll finish up the road trip on Saturday, Oct. 17 at California Baptist.
