Penguins drop first game of SoCal road trip at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Sarah Nelson had 22 points on 11-of-16 but the Dominican University of California women's basketball team was held to 26-of-76 shooting (34.2 percent) in an 89-57 loss at California Baptist on Thursday evening in PacWest Conference play.

The 34.2 percent was the lowest the Penguins posted since their season-opening loss at Chico State. Dominican, which entered the night ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II, also allowed California Baptist to shoot 52.1 percent (37-of-71), the highest shooting percentage allowed by the Penguins this season. Dominican also made only one three-pointer on 10 attempts while CBU sank nine shots from behind the arc.

Dominican trailed by 10 points six minutes in, though would cut the lead to five on a layup from freshman Sandra Ikeora. However, the Lancers went on an 18-4 run that blew the contest open. The Lancers led 53-31 at the half and extended their lead to as large as 33 in the second half.

Ikeora added a career-high 10 points. Allyssa Weatherd added eight points and had team highs of seven rebounds and five assists. Kelsey McKeon scored six points and Carly Holboke added five points in the loss.

Cassidy Mihalko added 23 points for CBU and had 18 at halftime. Courtney Nelson added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Darsha Burnside also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Penguins continue their three-game road trip through Southern California on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Azusa Pacific. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. Live coverage will be provided by the Cougars and will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
