Penguins get back in win column with rout of Fresno Pacific

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team scored 32 points in the final 10 minutes to run away with an 80-55 PacWest victory against Fresno Pacific on Saturday night in the Conlan Center.

The quicker-paced finish was quite the contrast to the beginning of the game, which saw the Penguins score four points in the first four minutes and only 13 a quarter of the way into play. Still, the Penguins never trailed and cleaned up on the boards, 42-22, and limited the Sunbirds to 38 percent (19-of-50), including 34.6 percent (10-of-24) in the first half. That helped the Penguins hold FPU to under their average of 59.4 points per game.

Dominican led by six early but FPU wiped away the deficit with a 8-2 run to tie the game at 10-10. Dominque Taplin dished to Karl Ohrner for a three-pointer at the top of the key at 11:23 and the Penguins never trailed again. In the final five seconds of the first half, Ohrner knocked down a pair of free throws, then Luke Selway came up with a steal off the inbounds and dished to a cutting Taplin to send the Pegnuins into the locker room with a 30-21 halftime lead.

The Penguins poured it on in the second half. Mathew Lipski opened things up with a layup to push the lead to double digits and the lead never got smaller than seven. Dominican came out of the eight-minute media timeout and went on a 23-6 run that lasted into the two-minute mark. Jonny Bates' free throws capped that run and gave Dominican its largest lead of the game, 75-46.

Taplin, who scored 23 points two nights ago and was last week's PacWest player of the week, led all players with 19 points with five rebounds and two assists. Josh Ramirez added 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting with five rebounds and three assists. Josh Armstrong added 13 points. Mathew Lipski pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Madison Higgins led the Sunbirds with 15 points.

The Penguins will look for the season sweep against FPU on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. when Dominican heads to Fresno.
