Upset against second-place BYU-Hawaii ends in heartbreak

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team got an early jump on BYU-Hawaii but fell late, 64-61, to the PacWest's second-place team on Monday night in the Conlan Center.

After Celeste Claw scored eight points and gave BYU-Hawaii an early 10-7 lead Dominican came out firing. Carly Holboke tied the game at 10-10 and gave the Penguins a 12-10 on their next possession. The Penguins made three-pointers on their next three trips to go ahead 21-10 and at that point were 5-for-5 from deep. However, the Penguins went scoreless for the next five minutes and struggled the rest of the game, going just 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from deep the rest of the night. The Seasiders used that drought to cut the lead to seven, then to four before Allyssa Weatherd scored three points in the final 40 seconds of the half to bring the halftime lead to 30-23.

BYU-Hawaii wiped away the lead in the first two minutes of the second half. A Carly Holboke three-pointer gave the Penguins the lead and the game remained a one-possession game nearly the entire second half. Dominican's last lead came at 11:17 on a Weatherd jumper in the paint to make the score 47-45. Jessy Marshall's three-pointer tied the game at 57-57 with 4:15 to go but the Penguins scored only four more points over the final four minutes. A Claw layup and five Seasiders free throws down the stretch were enough to edge the Penguins.

Holboke matched a career-high of 20 points with four three-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Weatherd and Nelson each added 11 points and Jade Castro chipped in 10 points. Nelson, the leading shot blocker in NCAA Division II, pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and tallied eight blocks. The night's performance moved Nelson to the top of the program's career points leaders in the Division II era with 701 career points, surpassing former teammate Kimi Nakmaura (698). Nelson's 75 blocks this season sets the program's single-season blocks record, which she previously held with 72 in 2012-13.

Celeste Claw scored a team-high 19 points and seven assists for the Seasiders and had eight points in the first minute and half of play. Emily Nelson and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo each added 13 points.

Dominican's five-game homestand continues on Thursday, Jan. 22 when Chaminade visits the Conlan Center. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live with audio provided by radio.dominican.edu. That is Academic Night, where the Penguins' 2013-14 PacWest Academic Achievement Award banner will be unveiled.
