Three-pointers hurt Penguins in road loss

SAN DIEGO — Three players reached double digits for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team but the Penguins fell victim to the three-point shooting of Point Loma in an 81-56 PacWest Conference loss on Monday night in Golden Gym.

Winners of three of their last four games, the Sea Lions went 13-of-30 (43.8 percent) from deep for the game. Dominican, however, started 0-for-9 and was 0-for-7 in the first half before making six late in the game. Jade Castro's late 3-of-3 effort from deep did help Dominican go 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) for the game. Dominican held a brief lead in the first four minutes of the game. However, the Sea Lions capitalized on missed shots and turnovers with a 10-2 run and a 19-10 lead. The Penguins went on to committed 23 turnovers while the Sea Lions limited theirs to nine. Dominican trailed 39-28 by the half.

Allyssa Weatherd scored a team-high 16 points for the Penguins and pulled down six rebounds. Sarah Nelson had 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven blocks. The senior continues to lead all of NCAA Division II women's players, having entered the game with 4.67 blocks per game. Castro added 10 points in the loss.

Madison West led all players with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including five three-pointers. Roya Rustamazda added 14 points off the bench. Sydney Tonack had 13 points for Point Loma.

Dominican returns to San Rafael to host a five-game homestand featuring three Hawaii teams, Dixie State, and Fresno Pacific. The homestand will also feature several promotions, including the debut of Chilly the Penguin's all-new look during the doubleheader on Thursday, Jan. 22. The homestand begins on Saturday, Jan. 17 vs. UH Hilo.
