Volleyball shows promise against Grand Valley, loses steam against Minnesota State Moorhead

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOLDEN, Colo. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team left The Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado Mines still in search of the team's first win of 2014 on Saturday. The Penguins were swept 3-0 in their final two matches of the weekend against No. 14 Grand Valley State (16-25, 20-25, 12-25) and Minnesota State Moorhead (11-25, 12-25, 16-25).

The Penguins (0-4) took advantage of early errors by Grand Valley State (2-1) and staked a 5-2 lead. A four-point swing gave the Lakers an 8-6 lead, one that they wouldn't relinquish. A 7-0 Lakers run put the Penguins down by 10 and Grand Valley State took set one 25-16.

Another slow Lakers start, plus an Amanda Lee service ace, put Dominican up early again in set two and the Penguins led 14-11. Another 7-0 Lakers run turned the tables and found the Penguins down 18-14. Dominican was dispatched 25-20 then went quickly in set three.

Dominican never got its momentum going against Minnesota State Moorhead (2-2) despite eight kills from sophomore Madeline Powelson and half a dozen from freshman Aimee Steinwand.

Steinwand had two aces on the day and leads the team with 33 kills.Powelson finished the day with 13 kills. Lee recorded 11 digs in each match and has 60 through four matches.

The Penguins return home to host the 2014 PacWest/GNAC Women's Volleybal Crossover Tournament beginning Thursday, Sept. 11. The eight-team tournament will feature 16 matches across three days. Full tournament coverage will be available at dominicanathletics.com/crossover.
