SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team put up a fight in set two of Friday evening's match vs. California Baptist but the Penguins' defense struggled in a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-17) PacWest loss.
Dominican (2-10/0-3 PacWest) trailed most of the night and never led in set one. An
Aimee Steinwand kill put the Penguins up 21-16 and forced a CBU timeout. The Lancers pulled even at 22-22 and went ahead on a Dominican error.
Shannon Riggio-Kerley's kill put Dominican back ahead 25-24 but the Penguins were unable to take advantage of set point, instead seeing the Lancers go up 2-0 thanks to a pair of crucial Dominican errors to end the set. Steinwand recorded a kill to begin set three but the Penguins wouldn't lead again. With set three tied 12-12, CBU went on an 8-1 run to take control of the set.
Steinwand led the Penguins with 13 kills but as a team Dominican posted a .088 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, CBU (8-4/4-0 PacWest) made the most of its attacks, posting a .361 attack percentage, including .483 in the third and final set. The Penguins also only had 36 total digs while the Lancers kept the ball in play with 52 digs.
One bright spot for the Penguins came at the net, where the Penguins combined for seven total team blocks.
Lauren Hackett led CBU with 14 kills followed by 11 from Michelle Waber.
Dominican will look to snap its six-match skid and notch its first PacWest win on Saturday when the Penguins host Azusa Pacific. The match is slated for 7 p.m. in the Conlan Center. Live coverage will be available at
