Penguins go down quietly at Dixie State

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team fell Saturday afternoon at Dixie State in three straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-19).

Dominican (0-8/0-2 PacWest) never got its bearings despite evenly distributing the offensive attack. Sixteen hitting errors compared to only 21 kills, to go along with six reception errors, kept the Penguins from gaining any advantage against the Red Storm (5-5/2-0).

The Penguins fell behind 6-3 early but tied the opening set 11-11 and even took a 12-11 lead. Dixie State answered with a 13-3 run to finish the set and go up early. The momentum spilled into the second set as Dominican fell behind 14-1 with the Penguins' lone point coming on a ball handling error. Dominican trailed 20-19 in set three but the Red Storm scored the final five points to end the match.

Samantha Rains had a team-high six kills for Dominican, followed by Madeline Powelson's five.

Dominican returns home to the Conlan Center for the next six matches. The Penguins host three straight matches beginning on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. vs. Point Loma and will also take on California Baptist and Azusa Pacific at the end of the week. Before the homestand begins, Dominican Head Coach Gayle Stammer will join Penguin Radio on Wednesday, Sept. 24 on the Temple of Swan's "Inside the Icebox" segment at 7:15 p.m.
