Box Score 2 KENTFIELD, Calif. —
Karly Harris pitched a perfect seventh inning as part of a complete game en route to a 4-1 victory and sweep over Holy Names University, 10-2 in five innings and 4-1, to give the Dominican University of California softball team a winning record for the first time in the NCAA Division II era.
With the pair of wins, Dominican finishes at 27-26 and 17-15 in Pacific West Conference play under second year Head Coach
Sarah Iwata.
It was only fitting that on Senior Day, Harris (W, 7-10) and her teammates record program history. Harris tossed a four-hitter in her final collegiate game as she breezed through the HNU (12-41,5-27 PacWest) lineup time and time again. She settled down after allowing a two-out single in the first inning that gave the Hawks the early 1-0 lead.
But it was all the Penguins most of the afternoon. Fellow senior
Kayleigh Klingberg tied the game with a doubled and senior
Dominique Perry gave the Penguins a two-run lead with a ground-rule double over the left centerfield fence. In the fourth,
Catlyn Cavender drove home
Kayla Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly.
In game one, sophomore
Ashlyn Moriarity did what she's done all season to pick up her 17th win. That mark, as well as her 2.73 ERA, are both single-season records for the program in the Division II era.
Moriarity (W, 17-11) struggled early and allowed a run after issuing a pair of walks to begin the game. After the Penguins took a 2-1 lead on a Klingberg sac fly, Moriarity allowed another run in the second but left the bases loaded. Over the final three innings, she allowed just two hits.
The Penguins took advantage of a pair of Holy Names errors in the second and plated four runs to extend the lead to 6-2. The first three Dominican batters in the fourth inning reached base safely, resulting in Johnson scoring on a Perry single to right field.
After failing to capitalize further in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded, Dominican again found success to lead off the inning. Four batters reached safely before HNU recorded an out and pitcher Vanessa Pulido (L, 4-11) sailed two balls to the backstop. The first allowed
Rachel Ditta to score and the second moved
Katelyn Harden to third and a 3-2 single through the right side off the bat of Klingberg scored Harden easily, allowing the Penguins to walk off in the fifth inning.
Johnson's 54 hits are a new single-season record. Cavender finishes the season with a team-best .363 average, and fell just one hit short of setting the program record for batting average in a single season.
Senior
Rachel Santiago went 2-for-3 in game two and recorded a hit in her final collegiate at bat.
Klingberg finished 3-for-3 in game two and 4-for-6 with a run and three RBI to lead the team with 25 RBI and a .561 slugging percentage, a new single-season record. She finishes her career as the career leader in the Division II era in games played and started (both 190) and nearly every offensive category: at bats (521), hits (147), doubles (38), triples (9), home runs (14), RBIs (87), and total bases (245).
