Penguins fall in Tournament of Champions semifinal game to No. 8 HSU

Katelyn Harden was named to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team.
Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team fell to No. 8 Humboldt State in its final game at the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.A 3-2 record put the Penguins in the Gold Winner's Bracket but a slow start kept Dominican from advancing to the championship game.

The Jacks (33-10) started quickly with two runs in the first inning off of starter Ashlyn Moriarity (10-9). The sophomore gave up three hits in each of the first two innings and allowed five earned runs that found the Penguins (15-20) fighting from behind for the fourth consecutive game.

After mustering just two hits in the first three innings, Dominican's offense awoke with a three-hit fifth inning. Moriarity, who slid into the designated player position, led off the inning by swatting an 0-1 pitch over the left center field wall for her first homer of the season. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed Rachel Santiago to score from third. That play also proved costly as Alyssa Lanza attempted to advance to third but catcher Darian Harris recovered and threw to third baseman Julie Pena, who easily tagged a sliding Lanza for the second out of the inning.

Karly Harris pitched four hitless innings of work until the Jacks got to her in the seventh inning for four runs on three hits. After plating one run, a two-out, three-run home run by Pena put the game out of reach.

Freshman Katelyn Harden was named to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team. She appeared in all six games and batted .435/.417/.652 with a team-high 10 hits on the weekend. She had five doubles, five runs scored, and eight runs batted in. As a pitcher, she went 1-1 in three appearances and posted a 2.72 ERA in two complete-game efforts.

Tori Johnson also had a nice weekend. She hit .421/.500/.474 with eight hits, six runs scored, six runs batted in, and three walks. She leads the team with a .387 average on the season, 43 hits, and 23 runs.

Dominican returns to PacWest action on Thursday, April 10 at home versus Azusa Pacific University, then travels across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on Saturday, April 12 to face Holy Names University. The Penguins will then return to Turlock next Sunday, April 13 for a non-conference doubleheader versus Cal State Stanislaus.
