Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team was two defensive outs from upsetting No. 15 Dixie State University, then four outs away from a win in game two but both times Dixie State rallied from behind to sweep Sunday's PacWest doubleheader.
Back-to-back singles from
Catlyn Cavender and
Tori Johnson got the Penguins going in the third inning. Cavender advanced to third on a throwing error by second baseman Nicole Chavez and scored with no out recorded on the fielder's choice.
After DSU pitcher Aryn Feickert elected to throw to third instead of getting the easy third out at first,
Katelyn Harden made her pay with a single to right center to score
Kayla Rodriguez and double the Penguins' lead to 2-0 in the fifth.
Dominican pitcher
Ashlyn Moriarity (L, 15-11) flirted with trouble all day, allowing a runner in every inning and left the bases loaded in the fourth. The Red Storm finally got to her in the seventh when she struggled with her command. Moriarity issued a leadoff walk and two batters later Courtney Sherwin singled down the right field line to tie the game 2-2.
In the ninth, DSU's Rochelle Jenkins reached on an error that allowed leadoff batter Courtney Hine to score, then scored in a rundown that ended in a throwing error to put the Red Storm ahead 4-2. Feickert (W, 20-6) shut down the Penguins in extras and did not allow a baserunner.
In game two, with runners on the corners in the first,
Kayleigh Klingberg hit into a fielder's choice. The speedy Rodriguez beat the throw at second, which allowed Cavender to score.
Josey Hartman's error in the second allowed
Kayla Rodriguez to score to make it 2-0 but the Penguins left runners on the corners — Dominican went on to strand 11 total runners in the game.
In the fifth, Dominican took advantage of poor DSU defense.
Samantha Talavera legged out a two-out grounder after Chavez bobbled the ball at second and Klingberg and
Leslie Mesa both scored to keep the Penguins ahead, 4-1.
Karly Harris (L, 6-10) breezed through three innings of work before Dixie State got a run back in the fourth. The Red Storm didn't stop there though and posted four-run innings in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-4 lead.
Dominican rallied in the seventh with a two-run Cavender triple to right center before falling 9-6.
The Red Storm (44-8,27-5 PacWest) ran its win streak to 21 and in doing so secured the 2014 PacWest title. Dominican (23-26,13-15 PacWest) fell to three games under .500 and will need to win out against Academy of Art and Holy Names to capture the program's first winning record in the NCAA Division II era.
Dominican heads to Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, Calif. on Monday, April 28 to make up a previously scheduled PacWest doubleheader vs. ART U that had been rained out. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
