Box Score 2 BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team had another strong pitching performance from
Ashlyn Moriarity in a 3-0 victory but was forced to settle for a split with Notre Dame de Namur, dropping game two of the doubleheader 3-2.
Moriarity (W, 15-10), the reigning PacWest Co-Pitcher of the Week, tallied her 19th complete game of the season with a three-hit gem. She also moved into fifth in the PacWest in wins. The sophomore was perfect through three and a third innings and allowed only one hit through the first five innings. She allowed hits in the sixth and seventh but
Katelyn Harden was at the hot corner to snag hits her way to end each of those innings.
In fact, Harden saw plenty of action. The freshman prevented all three hits in the third with three assists and finished with eight in game one alone, and a dozen on the day to go with a pair of putouts.
Harden also put the Penguins (23-24/13-13 PacWest) ahead in the third with a slicing RBI single to right field that scored
Kayla Rodriguez from third.
Dominican took advantage of a Jenna Bassler (L, 13-11) wild pitch in the fourth. The ball went to the backstop and skipped down the third base line, which allowed
Leslie Mesa to dash home. NDNU (22-30/14-17 PacWest) catcher Kayla Anderson threw home in hopes of recording an out but her throw sailed high, which allowed pinch runner
Marissa Cordisco to also score.
The Penguins fell behind early in game two and let things get away late, though they threatened until the final at-bat.
Karly Harris (L, 6-9) hit a batter and walked another in the third. She then allowed a single that left fielder
Tori Johnson bobbled. That allowed the runners to move up and take an extra base with Amanda Wallach scoring on the error.
Harris issued a leadoff walk in the seventh that resulted in a run. Later in the inning Wallach laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Priscilla Hernandez, who had also reached on a walk.
Down to their final three outs, the Penguins made things interesting. With one out,
Catlyn Cavender doubled to left center to score a pair but Shelby Reali (W, 8-17) settled down for the final two outs.
Due to field conditions in Marin being rendered unplayable by inclement weather, the games were played at NDNU's home field at Notre Dame High School. Dominican remained the home team for the doubleheader.
Johnson, who finished her day 3-for-7, is now batting a team-best .347. Lanza went 2-for-4 with a run and a walk to raise her average to .287.
Winners of seven of their last 10, the Penguins are scheduled to face No. 15 Dixie State in a PacWest doubleheader on Sunday, April 27. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at McInnis Park. Live stats will be available at
