Ashlyn Moriarity recorded her fourth decision in the last five appearances to improve to 14-10 and the Dominican University of California women's softball team split with Academy of Art University, in a PacWest doubleheader on Sunday.
Moriarity scattered four hits and struck out five in blanking the Urban Knights (14-29/11-13 PacWest) in a 4-0 game one victory. Moriarity helped her own cause in the second inning when she drove home
Kayleigh Klingberg, who led off the inning with a ground-rule double.
Catlyn Cavender drove home a run with a bases-loaded RBI single and
Tori Johnson grounded out to bring home a third rune in the inning. Johnson drove home another run in the fourth.
Moriarity has now recorded five shutouts and lowered her season ERA to 2.99.
The Penguins (22-23/12-12 PacWest) fell behind early in game two, spotting ART U a run in each of the first three innings.
Katelyn Harden scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth and
Rachel Santiago's single drove home Klingberg to cut the lead to 3-2. The Penguins had a chance to tie the game in the fifth but
Catlyn Cavender was called out on a close play at home on a throw from center fielder Elyse Cordova. ART U added an insurance run on an error in the seventh to make it 4-2.
Karly Harris took the loss in game two and fell to 6-8.
Angelina Lombardi pitched four innings of relief and did not allow an earned run.
Harden went 3-for-5 on the day and is now hitting .302 in her rookie campaign. Klingberg finished her day 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of runs and is now batting .340.
