Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team moved to 19-22 on the season with a non-conference split at Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday to take the season series 2-1.
In game one, Cal State Stanislaus (13-34) jumped on the Penguins (19-22) with a two-run bottom of the first. Dominican cut the lead in half in the top of the second. The top of the order put together three consecutive hits. Pitcher
Ashlyn Moriarity (12-10) singled back up the middle to drive home
Leslie Mesa.
Kayla Rodriguez singled down the right field line to load the bases but Karina Callazo (5-5) had back-to-back strikeouts to escape further trouble.
The Warriors broke things open in the third with a crooked inning. Brianna Nicholson lined a ball to third with the bases loaded. The ball glanced off the glove of
Katelyn Harden at third for an error and into foul territory, which allowed two runs to score. Kristan Burns doubled through the left side to make it 5-1.
Dominican trimmed the lead yet again after giving up runs in the prior half inning and cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth. Moriarity drew a leadoff walk and
Catlyn Cavender drove in a pair of unearned runs.
A Danielle Kelm sacrifice fly drove home Nicholson for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to build the lead back to three.
In game two, the Penguins broke things open with a four-run first.
Leslie Mesa got the scoring started with an RBI double and would go 3-for-3 in the game with two runs, two RBI, and a walk.
Samantha Talavera also had two hits, including a run and an RBI in the first. Mesa drove home another run in the second and scored in the fifth on a
Rachel Santiago sacrifice fly for some much needed insurance.
Mesa also helped out on defense by crashing into the right field fence to make the catch and rob Melissa Robles of extra bases.
Senior
Karly Harris pitched her way to her second win in as many days. She induced seven popups in the first five innings until she was touched for three runs in the sixth. She gave up one more in the seventh and loaded the bases in the seventh but got yet another popup to end the game.
The Penguins host a pair of conference doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19 versus Holy Names University and Academy of Art University. Live coverage for both doubleheaders will be available at
