Penguins earn doubleheader sweep behind career pitching performances

Rachel Santiago comes across the bag at second for the throw after getting the force out in the seventh inning.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN LEANDRO, Calif. — Sophomore Ashlyn Moriarity struck out a career-high seven and senior Karly Harris tossed a one-hitter as the Dominican University of California softball team recorded a pair of 4-1 and 3-0 victories over Pacific West Conference rival Holy Names University on Saturday.

Moriarity (12-9, 3.17 ERA) limited Holy Names (11-32/4-18 PacWest) to four hits and fanned seven in a complete-game effort. She received all the run support she needed in the first inning when the Penguins (18-21/9-11 PacWest) chased starter Karolanne Tipton (2-9), who faced only five batters in a third of an inning.

Sophomore Tori Johnson reached base on a four-pitch walk and Katelyn Harden registered a single to right field, which set up a Leslie Mesa double to left field that plated Johnson. Samantha Talavera followed suit with an RBI single on a full count, then Moriarity helped her own cause with an RBI double to left field. Rachel Santiago grounded out for the second out but that allowed Talavera to come home on the play to give the Penguins a commanding 4-0 lead.

HNU scored a run in the fifth but Moriarity struck out Courtney Tarbat to end the threat and strand a pair of runners.

Harris (4-7, 4.12 ERA) mowed down the Hawks in game two. At one point, she retired eight in a row, including perfect frames in the second and third innings. After allowing the lone hit in the fifth inning, she returned to the circle for a perfect sixth and a scoreless seventh inning.

Dominican broke the scoreless contest in the fifth inning. Talavera singled to center and Marissa Cordisco pinch ran for her. Rachel Santiago followed with a single to right field, then both Cordisco and Santiago scored on Rachel Ditta's two-out single up the middle.

Catlyn Cavender added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Kayla Rodriguez, who led off the inning with a single. Rodriguez showed off her speed by scoring all the way from second.

Talavera finished her day going 3-for-6 with a run. Cavender, Harden, Perry, and Santiago all had two hits apiece. Cavender and Ditta each had a stolen base.

The Penguins head to Turlock, Calif. on Sunday, April 13 for a non-conference doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
