Penguins split with third-place Azusa Pacific

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team split with third-place Azusa Pacific University on Thursday in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.

The Penguins (16-21/7-11 PacWest) broke the game open with a two-out rally in the third inning. Katelyn Harden singled home Alyssa Lanza, who began the inning with a bunt single. Leslie Mesa followed with a double to left center to drive home Harden and Tori Johnson, and Kayleigh Klingberg kept the hit parade going with an RBI triple to center field to extend the lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Ashlyn Moriarity (11-9) got back in the win column with a complete-game effort. She limited the Cougars (33-15/20-5 PacWest) to six hits. She allowed a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth but got great defense from her infield when Rachel Santiago snagged a liner and threw across to Katelyn Harden at third base to double off the runner. Moriarity got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to secure the victory.

The Cougars took advantage of a two-out situation of their own in the first inning of game two. After Karly Harris issued back-to-back walks, Sona Babayan took advantage with an RBI single.

The defense failed Harris in the fifth inning. In a bases-loaded jam, the pitcher induced a ground ball but Klingberg threw the ball away trying to get the forceout at home. Harris limited further damage by getting a double play to the left side.

Harris (2-7) took another hard-luck loss. She allowed one earned run in a complete game effort. Carly Xepoleas (13-4) earned the win for the Cougars, striking out six in the shutout.

Dominican continues PacWest play with a doubleheader versus Holy Names University on Saturday, April 12. Those games will be played at Thrasher Park in San Leandro, Calif. beginning at 12:00 p.m.
