Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Dominican Univeristy of California women's softball team hadn't played a game in two weeks due to weather delays but the Penguins showed no signs of rust in a split at Hawai'i Pacific University to open Pacific West Conference play on Sunday.
Game one was a pitcher's duel. Both teams threatened early in the game with runners in scoring position but neither team plated a run until the seventh when Dominican (7-6/1-1 PacWest) broke through. That run came in the form of a two-out single by sophomore pitcher Ashlyn Moriairity, followed by a double to center field by catcher
Dominique Perry.
Both game one starters went the distance. Moriarity (5-1) allowed just three hits and three walks, and struck out a pair. It was her second complete-game shutout of the season. Her HPU (8-10/8-10 PacWest) counterpart, Kristen Caskey (3-8), allowed nine hits, including three to
Leslie Mesa.
In game two, the Penguins jumped out to another 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning,
Samantha Talavera's pinch hit single to to left field plated
Leslie Mesa, who singled earlier in the inning.
The Sea Warriors stormed back with a massive fifth inning and put things well out of reach with seven runs, and another run for good measure in the sixth.
Karly Harris (1-4) allowed four hits over the first four innings before being roughed up for five runs.
Katelyn Harden allowed three runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Chandell Dacosin (5-2) tossed a six-hitter complete game for HPU.
The Penguins will head face BYU-Hawaii on Monday, March 10 for another PacWest doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. right back at Sand Island Park.
