Box Score 2 BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team split its Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Notre Dame de Namur University on Friday. The Penguins dropped a tough 3-2 game one in extra innings, then snapped their 10-game skid with a 4-2 victory in game two.
In the third inning,
Alyssa Lanza singled and stole second, then scored on a two-out error to give the Penguins (12-17/6-10 PacWest) an early 1-0 lead. The lead held until the sixth inning, when the Argonauts (15-19/9-12 PacWest) tied the game in a rather unorthodox way.
Ashlyn Moriarity (8-7) held the Argos scattered just two hits over the first five scoreless innings. She allowed a leadoff double to Amanda Wallach, who later advanced to third, and walked Kayla Anderson to give NDNU runners on first and third. The Argos executed a double steal, which tied the game at 1-1 on Wallach's stealing home.
The game headed to extra innings from there. In the 11th, Dominican capitalized on the international tie breaker that places a runner on second base.
Rachel Santiago laid down a sacrifice bunt to move
Dominique Perry to third, then Lanza singled her home to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Dominican would leave the bases loaded and that would come back to haunt them.
Wallach singled home Courtney Acevedo from second, then Sara Montecito was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up a base on a flyball out, then Anderson hit a two-out single to the gap to drive home the winning run.
Dominican got off to a quick start in game two. Senior
Kayleigh Klingberg kept the first inning alive with a two-out single, then freshman
Katelyn Harden launched a two-run shot, the first of her career, to give the Penguins the early 2-0 lead. Dominican added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off of NDNU starter Shelbi Reali (5-11) to make it 4-0.
Karly Harris (3-6) held the Argos offense quiet for the first six innigs, allowing just three hits. NDNU threatened in the seventh inning on back-to-back doubles and a Monica Volz RBI single to make it 4-2 but Harris induced a foul popup to Perry behind the plate to end things.
The Penguins' doubleheader on Saturday, March 29 vs. Holy Names University has already been postponed due to impending rain. That means the Penguins are off until next Friday, April 4 when they head to the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. They'll face a pair of nationally-ranked teams from the CCAA, No. 19 UC San Diego and No. 16 Cal State Monterey Bay, in the first day of the three-day tournament.
