Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team had opportunities but was unable to break through in a non-conference doubleheader at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.

Ashlyn Moriarity (8-5) was perfect through the first three innings and fanned four. She finally gave up a leadoff hit in the fourth and kept the the Pioneers scoreless until the fifth inning. The Pioneers manufactured a run after a Marisa Lerma leadoff double to tie it 1-1.

The Penguins loaded the bases in the sixth but were unable to push across a run, then stranded a runner at second in the seventh. CSUEB loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and pushed across the winning run on Alex Vela's bunt single.

Game two saw the Penguins fall behind early. Katelyn Harden (1-3) lasted just two innings after she allowed eight runs. The Penguins came back with a run in the third and again in the fourth, then cut the lead to 8-5 with a three-run sixth inning. The Penguins outhit the Pioneers 9-5 in the game but again left a pair on base.

The Penguins did get some nice fielding, particularly from Kayla Rodriguez, who made several plays at shorstop, and Alyssa Lanza. The freshman center fielder made a pair of great catches on the run. The defense was left watching in the second and third innings of game two, however, when Chelsie Kakela and Kelsey LaVaute launched three- and two-run homers, respectively.

Leslie Mesa went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Kayleigh Klingberg was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Rachel Santiago was 2-for-6 with a pair of runs on the day. Rodriguez went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in game two.

Dominican will look to snap its nine-game losing streak when they return to Pacific West Conference action in a doubleheader against Holy Names University on Saturday, March 29. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at College of Marin in Kentfield, Calif. Live coverage will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
