Box Score 2 KENTFIELD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team had glimpses of breaking through against No. 3 California Baptist University on Saturday but dropped both games of its doubleheader, 10-5 and 7-4.
In the first inning,
Kayleigh Klingberg laid down a squeeze to drive home
Kayla Rodriguez. The ball was fielded by CBU pitcher Belinda Renne, who overthrew her catcher, which allowed
Tori Johnson to score as well and give the Penguins (11-14/5-9 PacWest) an early 2-0 advantage.
The Penguins added on in the fourth. A pair of CBU errors allowed the inning to stay alive and Johnson made the Lancers pay with a bases-clearing double to right-center field to make it 5-0 in favor of the Penguins.
CBU (30-7/17-5 PacWest) showed why its the top team in the PacWest, scoring 10 unanswered runs over the last three innings including four-run innings in the sixth and seventh innings, to hand sophomore
Ashlyn Moriarity (8-5) her fourth consecutive loss. Renne survived the Penguins' early outburst, of which only one run was earned, to improve to 19-3.
In game two, the Lancers struck first with a run in the second but
Katelyn Harden answered in the bottom of the inning with a double to left center that drove home Klingberg.
The score remained 1-1 until the top of the sixth when the Lancers finally got to Dominican pitcher
Karly Harris. The senior allowed three runs on five hits, though two of those runs were unearned.
Down to its final three outs, Dominican rallied in the seventh for four hits and three runs to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings.
Rachel Santiago and
Alyssa Lanza singled and
Rachel Ditta reached on an error to load the bases. Santiago scored on Kayla Hatch's wild pitch.
Kayla Rodriguez drove home Lanza with an RBI groundout and Johnson tied the ball game with a single up the middle on a 1-2 pitch. Hatch was able to work out of further trouble and stranded a pair of Penguins to end the threat.
Neither team scored in the eighth and the Lancers yet again found a way to get to Harris in the ninth, when they scored three runs on three hits. Harris took the complete-game loss to fall to 2-6. Hatch improved to 11-3.
Johnson finished her day 4-for-8 with a run and four RBI. She leads the team with 32 hits and 15 runs, and is hitting .405 on the season.
Dominican will make up a previous rainout on Sunday, March 23 in a non-conference doubleheader at Cal State East Bay. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Hayward, Calif.
