Box Score 2 KENTFIELD, Calif. — Crooked innings proved to be the downfall for the Dominican University of California women's softball team against No. 3 California Baptist University on Friday. As a result, the Penguins (11-12/5-7 PacWest) fell under .500 for the first time this season agains the first-place Lancers (28-7/15-5 PacWest).
CBU starter Belinda Renee (18-3) limited Dominican to four hits in game one, with three of those hits coming off the bat of
Tori Johnson. An eight-run second inning set the tone and three runs in the third allowed the Lancers to take the game in five innings. It was the third consecutive loss for
Ashlyn Moriarity (8-3), whose ERA rose to 2.79.
In game two, Dominican scored twice on seven hits but stranded 10 runners. After CBU took a 3-0 lead off of starter
Karly Harris (2-5) in the first inning, Dominican scratched back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Kayla Rodriguez started things off with a single and was safe at second on a
Tori Johnson fielder's choice when Jacque Lopez failed to touch second for the out.
Leslie Mesa walked on four consecutive pitches, then
Kayleigh Klingberg drew a bases-loaded walk. A
Katelyn Harden fielder's choice later scored Klingberg but Dominican left a pair on.
The Penguins threatened in the second and third but left a pair of runners on, then another pair in the fifth.
Klingberg,
Rachel Ditta, and
Samantha Talavera all went 2-for-3 in game two.
Kayla Hatch (10-3) earned the Lancers win in game two.
