Penguins drop final doubleheader of Hawai'i trip

Ashlyn Moriarity dropped just her second decision of the season in her shortest outing of the season.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped its final doubleheader of a 10-game swing through Hawai'i, 8-0 and 9-1, in Pacific West Conference play to UH Hilo.

The Penguins (11-10, 5-5 PacWest) struggled offensively against UHH pitcher Ashley Nelson (8-4), who allowed just one hit — an Ashlyn Moriarity leadoff single in the fifth. Moriarity (8-2) had her shortest start in the circle of the season, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

Dominican didn't help its cause defensively, committing four infield errors in game, which allowed the third-place Vulcans (15-9/10-5 PacWest) to cruise to a six-inning victory.

Klingberg led off the second with a double and scored on a Moriarity single with no outs but that lead would be short-lived as the Vulcans would score the next nine runs en route to a five-inning victory.

The Penguins return home after a 5-5 road trip to host California Baptist in a pair of PacWest doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22. First pitch for both days is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at College of Marin Softball Field in Kentfield, Calif.
