Aggressive base running helps Penguins to split at Chaminade

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPIO, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's softball team split with Chaminade University on Thursday evening in Dominican's third doubleheader of its roadtrip through Hawai'i.

The Penguins (11-8/5-3) got on the board first in game one thanks to heads-up base running from Catlyn Cavender, who reached on a single. She advanced on a passed ball and made it to third on a Tori Johnson sacrifice bunt. She finally came home on a foul out by Leslie Mesa. After Kayla Rodriguez drew a two-out walk in the second inning, the speedster stole second and scored when Alyssa Lanza drove a 2-0 pitch to left field.

Ashlyn Moriarity allowed a Chaminade (6-6/5-5 PacWest) run in the fifth but the Penguins' lead would stick. The sophomore pitcher  went the distance and scattered four hits. She walked just one and struck out six.

Brett Aspel (2-5) took the loss for the Silver Swords in game one. She also tossed a complete game. She allowed two runs on five hits.

Dominican took a 1-0 lead in game two but Karly Harris couldn't escape the first inning and allowed four runs before being lifted. The Penguins came back with four runs in the second but Angelina Lombardi (0-1) struggled as well in the circle as the Silver Swords scored 10 runs in the second to put the game out of reach. Another Chaminade run in the fourth would would induce the run rule. Katelyn Harden struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief.

Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and stolen bases. Cavender went 3-for-6 with three runs scored.

The Penguins wrap up their trip with a short trip to UH Hilo on Saturday, March 15. First pitch is of that doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Hilo.
