Women's softball splits at BYU-Hawaii

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAIE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's softball team received production up and down the batting order in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader split at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday.

Three Dominican (10-7/4-2 PacWest) players finished with four or more hits on the day. Catlyn Cavender went 4-for-6 with two runs and a pair of walks. The freshman second baseman is now hitting a team-best .571 in 11 games. Samantha Talavera went 4-for-5 with two RBI, and Alyssa Lanza went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Dominican tagged junior Taylor Alvarez (1-7) for a run in the first on an RBI single to left field by Leslie Mesa but Alvarez left the bases loaded.

She wasn't as fortunate in the second inning. Rachel Ditta and Tori Johnson both singled, followed by a Cavender walk to load the bases. This time, the Penguins took full advantage. Ashlyn Moriarity reached on an error that plated Ditta. Two batters later, Dominique Perry was hit by a pitch to bring home Johnson. Talavera singled to left field to make it 4-0 before Keagan Hanny came in to pitch and get out of another bases-loaded jam.

Hanny allowed runs in the fourth on a Ditta sacrifice fly and in the sixth when Klingberg launched a 2-2 pitch to right field for her third homer of the season.

The Seasiders (3-13/3-11 PacWest) manufactured a pair of runs in the fourth, taking advantage of an error, then moving runners into scoring position by stealing. A pair of hits in the sixth led to one more BYU-Hawaii run.

Sophomore Ashlyn Moriarity (7-1) won her seventh game of the season with a complete game five-hitter in game one of the day. Her ERA is now at 1.62 after allowing two earned runs on the day and her opponent batting average is just .206.

Freshman Katelyn Harden (1-2) pitched decently in game two but took the loss after she allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits over five innings of work. The freshman struck out a career-high six batters. Senior Karly Harris came on for a perfect inning of relief.

Gabby Hawkins (2-4) struck out seven and picked up the win in game two with a complete-game effort for the Seasiders.

The Penguins took the early lead in the second after Kayla Rodriguez stole second and scored on a Lanza single. That lead held until the third inning when BYU-Hawaii took advantage of another Dominican error and scored three times. Another run in the fourth would add insurance for the Seasiders, as Dominican would get a run back in the sixth on a Klingberg double.

The Penguins face Chaminade in another PacWest doubleheader on Thursday, March 13. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. in Honolulu. The trip concludes on Saturday, March 15 at UH Hilo.
