Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's softball received strong starting pitching and an offensive outburst from left fielder Tori Johnson in a sweep of BYU-Hawaii. The Penguins topped the Seasiders 1-0 and 9-1 (6 innings) in Pacific West Conference play.

In game one, Ashlyn Moriarity (6-1) allowed just one hit in the first inning and pitched her third shutout of the season and second in as many days. She struck out five and has already doubled her win total from her freshman campaign a year ago.

The Penguins (9-6/3-1 PacWest) broke through in the fifth inning. Freshmen Catlyn Cavender singled and advanced to second on a Rachel Ditta sac bunt. Two batters later, Tori Johnson took a 2-0 pitch to left field for a double that plated Cavender.

Dominican earned its first victory of the season by run-rule with a solid pitching performance from Karly Harris (2-4) in game two. The senior got back on track with five innings of one-run ball. She struck out five and didn't issue a walk. Angelina Lombardi worked the sixth inning. She struck out one and walked one in a scoreless inning.

In the second inning, catcher Dominique Perry reached on an error then Cavender earned a walk to move Perry into scoring position. First baseman Kayleigh Klingberg singled to load the bases. With two outs, Ditta singled to left field to clear the bases and give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.

Johnson started another rally in the third with a leadoff single. She scored when Leslie Mesa reached safely on an error. Perry followed with another single, and Cavender drove in a run with her second of three hits on the day. Klingberg and Alyssa Lanza both singled with Perry scoring on Lanza's base hit. Taylor Alvarez worked out of further trouble by leaving the bases loaded.

The Seasiders (2-12/2-10 PacWest) finally got a run in the fifth inning but Dominican rallied for three more runs in the sixth to put things out of reach. Lombardi's scoreless sixth inning would end things early.

Johnson finished her day 4-for-7 with two runs and an RBI. She leads the Penguins in nearly several offensive categories — she is hitting .457, has 21 hits in 46 at bats, and has scored 11 runs.

Dominican faces BYU-Hawaii again in another PacWest doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
