Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team crashed the boards hard on Wednesday and continued to find ways to win games with a 64-61 victory over Holy Names University.
Strong rebounding from
Salonika Quewon-Owens and
Jasmine Cox helped give the Penguins the edge, 47-30, in the game, with those two alone combining for 19.
In handing the Hawks (9-10/5-7 PacWest) their fourth straight loss, Dominican (6-15/6-9 PacWest) traded places in the Pacific West Conference standings with its cross-bay rival with the Penguins moving into ninth place.
Carly Holboke was a point shy of matching a career-high and was one of four Dominican players to reach double digits and finished her night with 18 points on 7-of-11 (.636) shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 (.500) from deep. She also grabbed five rebounds and had an assist.
Holboke had eight points in the first half and helped the Penguins grab as large as an 11-point first half lead. The Penguins settled for a seven-point halftime lead, 33-26, and saw the lead shrink to a single point with 4:35 to play after the Hawks went on a 9-2 run.
The Penguins held their ground in the final minutes and grabbed seven rebounds while holding the Hawks to 2-of-6 (.333) shooting down the stretch. A Cox layup pushed the lead to three with 21 seconds remaining and the Hawks were unable to tie the game in their final possession.
Quewon-Owens had her second consecutive double-double, which was also her sixth of the season. She finished her night with 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals.
Jessy Marshall added 11 points and Cox added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Winners of four of their last five, Dominican will look to make three in a row next Thursday, Feb. 13 vs. rival Notre Dame de Namur (4-15/3-10 PacWest). That is also Academic Night. Dominican President Mary Marcy will be in attendance as the program's four PacWest Academic Achievement Award banners are presented at halftime of the men's.
