Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Sonoma State on Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-0 before a late rally fell short, 11-8.
Dominican (3-4) never got anything going offensively in game one and had just three hits from
Kayleigh Klingberg,
Ashlyn Moriarity, and
Alyssa Lanza.
Moriarity (2-1) fell for the first time in 2014. She allowed seven hits, five earned runs, and struck out three but needed 113 pitches in a complete game effort.
The first five batters in the SSU (2-0) lineup went a combined 6-for-17 (.353) while Amanda Llerena (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing just two hits in four innings.
The Penguins took an early 2-0 lead in game two, though it was short lived. Lanza got things going with an infield leadoff single and
Tori Johnson followed with a single to left field. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Lanza came home on
Leslie Mesa's sacrifice fly.
Katelyn Harden helped her cause with an RBI single to center field that brought Johnson home.
Sonoma State took advantage of Harden (1-1) in the bottom half of the inning. Four hits coupled with aggressive base running led to a six-run inning. A pair of unearned runs in the fourth put SSU up 9-2. Dominican got those runs back in the top of the fifth thanks to two-run RBI double down the first base line by
Catlyn Cavender.
The Seawolves answered yet again in the bottom half of fifth and extended the lead to 11-5 with one run the result of a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Dominican got three more back on a two-RBI double from Johnson and an RBI groundout by Moriarity. The 6-7-8 hitters went in order in the seventh and Dominican was never able to completely close the gap.
Lanza finished her day 3-for-6 with two runs and is hitting .316 on the season.
The Penguins head to Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Feb. 8 for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
