Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team received career performances from
Jasmine Cox and
Carly Holboke and the Penguins escaped Tobin Gym with a 67-61 overtime road victory over Pacific West Conference rival Holy Names University on Saturday.
The Penguins (8-15/8-9 PacWest) victory, coupled with Saturday's Notre Dame de Namur loss to Academy of Art, guaranteed Dominican a berth into the PacWest Championships being hosted March 6-8 at Point Loma in San Diego.
Carly Holboke had a nice day by the end of regulation with 11 points. That day quickly turned into a career-day for the freshman sharpshooter, as she powered the Penguins in the extra period with three three-pointers that dashed any hopes of a Hawks (9-13/5-11 PacWest) comeback. Her career-high 20 points led all players. Holboke matched a career-high four three-pointers made and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
The Penguins were much more efficient in overtime, going 5-of-9 (.556). For the game, they shot just 22-of-74 (29.7 percent). That helped
Jasmine Cox grab 24 rebounds, both a career-high and a Dominican record in the NCAA Division II era. She matched a season-high 18 points for her third double-double of the season.
Dominican's lead disappeared in the second half when the Hawks opened with an 11-0 run to take a 38-33 advantage of their own. Holy Names led until the eight-minute mark when Dominican took the lead back on a 9-0 run. That gave the Penguins a 50-44 lead with four minutes to go. Dominican had just one free throw in the final two minutes of regulation and HNU finished with a 5-0 run to force overtime.
Noelle Roldan had a good look for Dominican but it didn't fall and she came up with a huge steal at the other end to keep the game knotted at 53-53.
Early on, the Penguins looked like they would cruise to their fourth consecutive victory, leading much of the first half and by as much as 11. Cox alone had 12 points and 17 rebounds at the break.
Dominican's leading scorer,
Salonika Quewon-Owens, added 15 points. Quewon-Owens and
Sarah Nelson each pulled down nine rebounds, as the Penguins outrebounded HNU 59-50.
Sonia Aguilar came off the bench to lead the Hawks with 21 points before fouling out in overtime. Renique Fitzpatrick had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
