Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team won its third straight and its fifth out of six games on Thursday night with a resounding 75-52 victory over visiting Notre Dame de Namur.
Salonika Quewon-Owens led all players with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Quewon-Owens raised her scoring average to 12.7 points per game and has scored in double digits in seven consecutive games and nine of her last 10.
Jasmine Cox added a season-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season.
Sarah Nelson added 12 points and six blocks and
Carly Holboke, the reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week, added eight points.
It was just a two-point game, 30-28, at halftime in favor of the Argos (4-17/3-12 PacWest). A Nelson jumper tied it to begin the second half, then an 18-1 Penguins (7-15/7-9 PacWest) broke the game open, 54-35, with 10 minutes to go. From there, Dominican pushed the lead to the final margin of 23 thanks to strong bench play and 32 total points in the paint, compared to just 20 by the Argos.
The Penguins turned 24 Argos turnovers into 29 points and outrebounded them 51-40.
Jennifer Jasper led NDNU with 19 points. She had 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the first half so the Penguins did a good job of containing her in the second half.
Dominican heads to Holy Names University (9-12/5-10) on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2:00 p.m. The Penguins snuck away with a 64-61 victory over the Hawks in their first meeting last Wednesday.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, Dominican is hosting a #BLACKOUT, encouraging all fans to wear black as the men's lacrosse team's 2013 WILA Championship banner is unveiled. That is also Ron Powell Tribute night with all ticket sales benefitting the Roneil Powell Memorial Fund to help support the former Dominican player and coach's family.
