Dominican women bounce back with big road win at Dixie State

Salonika-Quewon Owens' fifth double-double of the season helped the Penguins beat Dixie State for the first time in program history.
Box Score SAINT GEORGE, Utah — Since joining the Pacific West Conference in 2009, the Dominican University of California women's basketball team was 0-7 against Dixie State University entering Saturday's game at Burns Arena.

That drought is over. Salonika Quewon-Owens notched her fifth double-double of the season with game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds and the Penguins surprised the Red Storm 64-47 on their home floor.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half and the score was knotted 30-30 at the half. The game remained tight for the next 10 minutes following the half until the Penguins (5-15/5-9 PacWest) broke the game open with a 12-point run. During that stretch, the Penguins also grabbed 14 rebounds. That dominance in rebounding resulted in a 59-37 advantage over the course of the game and allowed the Penguins to get second chances, which negated the team's 31.3 percent (21-for-67) shooting from the field.  Dominican held the Red Storm to eight points over the final 6:20 and extended the deficit to its largest of the game, 17, on a pair of Quewon-Owens free throws with less than a minute to go.

Dominican post players Jasmine Cox and Sarah Nelson both snatched seven rebounds a piece with Nelson adding 11 points. Lauren Hyatt added eight points, Carly Holboke and Noelle Roldan chipped in seven points apiece, and Jessy Marshall finished with six points. Danielle Yamauchi dished out a game-high six assists.

Haley Homestead led Dixie State with 15 points.

It was a nice bounceback game for Dominican after starting the trip with a tough loss at Point Loma. Winners of three of their last four, the Penguins return home to the Conlan Center on Wednesday, Feb. 5. They'll see PacWest rival Holy Names University (9-9/5-7) for the first of two times this season. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. with live coverage available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
